The Last Narco: Inside the Hunt for El Chapo, the World’s Most Wanted Drug Lord by Malcolm Beith describes why even TIME Magazine recognizes Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is one of the powerful persons in the world, even over current presidents of first world countries. Reading The Last Narco, is amazing to learn how a peasant from the Sierra Madre, through a serious of events becomes the most powerful drug trafficker in modern times and his organization becoming the most powerful organized crime on the western hemisphere at this current time. And although technically this book is not a biography of the Mexican capo given that little is known of Chapo’s childhood and initial involvement in drug trafficking, it’s definitely worth reading just to even learn what historically was Mexico’s first drug organization, the Guadalajara Cartel. Also it’s very interesting to read that on every attempt to catch the drug lord, the Mexican military/police always arrive “a couple of minutes late”, in essence giving the drug lord enough time to depart.
